THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

As a nation, we are not getting enough sleep, and we have found an increasing number of clients in our infrared sauna + float studio franchises sharing their challenges with quality sleep.

The (CDC) reported more than 35 percent of Americans get less than seven hours of sleep per night –with  50 to 70 million adults in the U.S. affected by a sleep disorder.

There’s a reason why Americans are constantly among the most sleep-deprived in the world. Our non-stop work culture, combined with increased usage of technology and social media, are strong contributors to stress levels. Being sleep-deprived isn’t a badge of honor; it’s a threat to your health.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommend that adults aged 18–60 years sleep at least 7 hours each night to promote optimal health and well-being. Sleeping less than seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and frequent mental distress.

Anxiety is frequently connected to sleeping problems. Excess worry and fear make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Sleep deprivation can worsen anxiety, spurring a negative cycle involving insomnia and anxiety disorders.

We all need ample sleep to promote healing, good health, and energy. It is pertinent for the body to sleep daily in order to properly carry out many mental and physical functions.

Thankfully, there are ways to improve sleep. At Pure Sweat Studios, infrared sauna and Floating have many benefits which are proven to increase effective sleeping habits. Finally, rest may find you.

how float therapy aids sleep

Floating is an impactful therapy for sleep support because it reduces stress and cortisol levels, as well as boosts magnesium. Floating addresses both the symptoms and the root case of poor sleep.

Float tanks are full of magnesium, an essential mineral to improve sleep + rest quality. Many of our clients equate floating to having had a really effective power nap (and some do in fact nap in session). While floating, the body is induced into a parasympathetic state, allowing all of its functions to rest, digest, and recharge.

Going back to the beginning… flotation therapy is based on a scientific approach to deep relaxation called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique (REST). This was first developed in 1954 at the National Institute for Mental Health. Essentially, floating triggers a deep relaxation response - even deeper than normal sleep - which allows us to drift into the Theta state. Unfortunately, without helpful wellness modalities like floating, many struggle to frequently enter a Theta state.

It’s no surprise that many Americans have high cortisol levels, which dramatically affect sleep functions. Floating has SCIENTIFICALLY BEEN PROVEN TO REDUCE CORTISOL LEVELS, which in addition to the calming benefits of magnesium, allows the body to recover from times of stress.

ONE STUDY tested seventy subjects, all of whom identified as having stress-related pain and 26 who had a burnout-related depression diagnosis. After 12 float sessions, results indicated that pain areas, stress, anxiety, and depression decreased, and sleep quality and optimism increased.

It is always such a beautiful vision when we see the transformation of clients before and after their floats. Their energy is brighter, and it’s like a wave of calm and clarity have washed away the stresses of the day. Hello sleep boost!

How Infrared Sauna Supports sleep

Getting A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP every night is essential to your physical and mental well-being. Research indicates that infrared sauna therapy may INDUCE SLEEP-MODULATING EFFECTS caused by disruptions in the circadian cycle. There is also evidence that relaxing in gentle heat, like in an infrared sauna, can be part of a great bedtime routine which improves sleep quality by promoting relaxation and oxygenation throughout the body.

Detoxification is also essential to healthy sleep. If our bodies are burdened by an overload of toxins, they will, in turn, be inhibited to function properly.

We often speak about the physical benefits of infrared saunas in our Studio franchises, but along with those benefits, we notice that when our bodies feel well, it’s much easier for our minds to be at rest. Naturally, with continued use of infrared sauna, people find themselves relaxing more easily. This leads to better sleeping patterns, lowered cortisol levels, and in turn reduced anxiety and stress.

Color therapy + darkness

In our studios, clients may enjoy our services in ambient light or darkness.

Both the deluxe and standard float suites have ambient blue light throughout the tank and fiberoptic star lights in the ceiling. This creates a serene and peaceful vibe for floaters.

During float room presentations, you may hear us recommend “baby in the womb” also known as floating in darkness. Clients floating in darkness may more easily find calm and even lull into sleep for a well deserved nap. Don’t worry if you can’t sleep - the magnesium is still working restful wonders.

In our Sunlighten saunas, the chromotherapy lights can be changed to different colors, stimulating various energy points to help your body re-establish its natural balance.

Pure Tip: Chromotherapy can also support sleep. Choose blue which encourages relaxation + calm.
